Access 2007 Export weirdness - need help

In Access 2007 I have a file that I would like to export to another person who has identified the need for the resultant file to be in the last format listed below (*.xls format).
When I open the Export portion of Access and click on Excel I can then open a drop-down window for various file-type outputs as follows:



Excel Binary Workbook (*.xlsb)
Excel Workbook (*.xlsx)
Microsoft Excel 5.09/95 Workbook (*.xls)
Excel 97-Excel 2003 Workbook (*.xls)

When I choose the last option (Excel 97...) Access performs well and outputs a file. However, the output file is in *.xps format!!!

Any ideas on why or what I can do to get it to output the *.xls it says it should?

there may be a compatibility issue between the exported data and the ability of excel to read it. also, see here: http://www.fileinfo.com/extension/XPS

there's a few things there that may be helpful as well. the other thing i can personally think of is that maybe your default file format setting in excel is playing a part? just a thought.

have you tried exporting to excel using different formats? if not, try it and see if there is any difference. that may also shed some light on the issue.
