When should I split my database

    Hi all,

I have nearly finished a stock control database for a company local to me. It is the first real job I have done in access apart fro assignments at university. The database will be used my multiple users (around 5-10 users) and I have heard that the database should be split. I was just wondering if it is better to wait until all work is completely finished before I split it and put the back end on the server to save any troubles. The only real work that needs to be done is a bit of SQL and queries on forms and reports so I don't think this would affect the back end file anyway.
Any advice would be very helpful to me as I am relatively new to this aspect to MS Access.

    Thanks again

    Jordan T

You still have some "link the BackEnd at run time" code to prepare and test. There is also the "Update everyone's FrontEnd" when needed code. Both of these issues have free code available that you can implement. I generally split the db when I have the BackEnd pretty stable. Still, I've been caught with needing to make some BE changes after splitting. Not too difficult.

    Thanks for the reply,
I don't really understand what you mean by "link the back end at runtime". If I fully complete the db, then split it through Access and put the back end on the server: \\ServerName\UserApps\AccessApps\Apps\MyApp\MyBack EndDB.mdb. If I then email all the users the front end forms, is that all I need to do?
I thought when I split it links the front to the back automatically

The FrontEnd has no idea where you plan to put the BackEnd. Here's a good link on the subject: http://allenbrowne.com/ser-01.html

I have tried locally on my machine and you specify when you split the db (\\ServerName\UserApps\AccessApps\Apps\MyApp\MyBac k EndDB.mdb) I only tested it in 2 different places on my machine, but it did link. I was just reading the article you sent as I read this reply.
