Quick Opinion Question: Best way to store Fiscal Year?

My office's fiscal year is July 1st to June 30th. (TODAY! WOOOO)

When they refer to fiscal year they say 2010/2011, and 09/10 etc.

I would make this a text type and put in 2010/2011 but then the data isn't usable without parsing.



I thought of an integer for just the year, but that gets confusing.

What about a date saying July 1st, 2009 = 2009/2010, but that's kinda confusing too.

Opinions? GO!

in my experience the fiscal year is 2009. The year in which it begins. I would have a field that is an integer type. (if the accounting department says that their policy is that it be the year it ends - so be it. but there is one or the other as the official year.)

this field doesn't have to display - and can be used for your internal sorting and such...you can have a second field in which you put the text that is the most useful text term commonly used by management.....
