    Give number to record

    Dear all,

Hope somebody can help me out with the following. I have a table (20k records) in which are three fields are included: location, customer, program. Is there a way in which I can do the following: create an extra field (being a key field) that exists of location and then a number of which the maximum is the number of customer & program combinations there are for that location.

So for example, In the location Amsterdam there are three customers (X, Y and Z) and three programs (A, B and C). I want to create a key which says Amsterdam1, Amsterdam2 and Amsterdam3.

    Order is not important.

    Hope this is clear.

    Thanks in advance,

    Michiel

I'm going to suggest strongly that you refresh yourself on Normalization. What you are requesting will give you yet additional issues to resolve. Google knows a lot about Normalization.

I concur with Allan --reviewing Normalization is a good start. Also, I'd recommend you write a clear description of what you are trying to accomplish in simple English --no jargon. When readers understand your situation, there may be many options.

    Good luck.

Great and indeed this is probably more a matter of structuring data in tables. I Will digg into the normalization topic and give it another shot. Thanks for your reply. Regards Michiel
