Sounds like you may be using the Wizard to do the import and the file type you are looking for is not part of the filtered file types. You might try clicking the file type option in the lower right of the dialog to include all files or something. I am guessing the Excel file you wish to import is of an older version or is macro enabled or something.
I too have seen this. Ticks me off.
Tho the file IS there. If I paste the path /file name it works, but it cant always display it for some reason.
Try F5 to refresh.
