This is one of many reasons experienced developers do not use multi-valued fields. They are a real pain in the backside.
I never use multi-valued fields nor look up FIELDS (in tables).
I also avoid multivalue fields but you can try using [multivaluefield].[value] rather than just multivaluefield but may not work. However here is a link on how you are supposed to do it
