    Network Security Question with Acess

OK here's a question for the IT guys....

I've completed my db and want to put a copy (not sure if "copy" is the correct word here) on several workstations for use. Now employees at these work station have different levels of access within the network. The IT guy is concerned that when the db is used at these workstations that the employee using the db will be able to access areas (directories) that they do not have the rights to so because they are not "logged in" as a "network" user.

Now my db does bring up files through a file path which is linked to a button and when clicked a folder opens revealing a number of file as it should do. But through this Open folder the user is now able to navigate back up the Directory trees. Now I've only tried this on my workstation, which I have close to Admin rights so this isn't a really valid test.

What I mean by test is I believe that who ever logs into the workstation that the "right" of that "login ID" is set to that workstation at that time no matter if using my db or what program that my involve navigating the network directory...

SO as long as the employee logging in has "rights" to the "folder" that may need to be accessed through my db (clicking the button) there shouldn't be any issues and if the User tries to navigate through the network directory they will be limited to access just as if they were NOT using the db...

The IT guy has never used Access so he's limited in the knowledge of how it may or may not effect network security.

    any opinions are welcome

You are correct in your assessment in paragraph 3 - access rights are determined by user ID. MS Access cannot override the network directory security settings, and users cannot do anything more than they can with Windows Explorer, for example.

What you can do is have one of your other users with lower access levels try to navigate to a folder they don't (or shouldn't) have access to, and try to view its contents (if they can even see the folder). Show the testing to your IT guy (who really ought to know this anyway, but...).

Thanks for all the reply's....I tried is with several employees and it is confirmed that the access rights for the User is set by network directory security setting associated to the Login ID
