Auto Sort files into Database

I have an idea I want to try, but do not know if it is possible.

I have tblSerialNumbers, and each record is a winch/hoist in my theatre, and there are over 200 winches/hoists. Frequently these items are Load Tested and a form is filled out, scanned, and saved as a pdf. My crew then uploads each scanned pdf into a the corresponding attachment field in tblSerialNumbers. This can be time consuming.

When the forms are scanned and saved, they are titled with an 8 character serial number followed by the date (ex. ST011607_1_17_14.pdf).

Is it possible, to have access look at multiple files and determine from the first 8 characters which record in tblSerialNumbers to place the pdf in the attachment field.

Are you aware Access has a 2GB size limit? Lots of large saved images can consume that limit quickly. Alternative is to save path to external file. Simpler code.
