break the link to a backend table

I need to make a change to a backed table (I need to add a field or make other change to the table's structure), but presuming that the table is currently linked, therefore "in-use", it is not possible; for this reason, I need to temporarily close the link; once I've made my changes, the links would be refreshed...

is there code to do so?

otherwise, I was thinking, I'd have to create a dummy table, change the links to the dummy, edit the real table, and then relink to it...
thought there would be an easier way...

    thoughts ?

    many thanks in advance,
    Mark

No need to unlink. Link does not cause the table to be 'in use' - an open query, form, or report using the table does.
How to attach file: http://www.accessforums.net/showthread.php?t=70301 To provide db: copy, remove confidential data, run compact & repair, zip w/Windows Compression.
