    Problems with zipping a db

I have always been able to 7-zip my files before. Recently I got a new computer and downloaded and installed 7-zip from SourceForge. I tried to 7-zip a database (accdb) of 4188kb, but it said it couldn't open it "as archive".

I don't know whether that means BECAUSE it is archived (and I removed the tick in the Ready To Archive checkbox) or IN THE FORM OF an archive. It still didn't 7-zip.

I then made it an mdb database (6656kb), but it wouldn't do that either.

I thought that maybe I had installed the 7-zip (some time ago, but not used since) and uninstalled it and re-installed it. That didn't help either.

What is it that I don't know or didn't do or did wrong?

    Thanks for any help.

Can you RightClick the file and "Send to Compressed (zipped) Folder"?

    Thanks for replying.

    No.

It doesn't give me that option.

I tried all the options there are and it didn't work on any except emailing, but when I emailed it to myself, it wouldn't open. It came up with the message:

This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel.

The only options containing "compress" are (and none of them work):

    Compress and email
    Compress to Filename.7z and email
    Compress to Filename.zip and email

I also reduced the database to a skeleton of what I needed to ask about in this forum, and it made it, 960kb.

Uninstall 7-Zip and see if the Compressed Folder option returns and then see if it works. WinXP correct?

Whew, you are amazingly fast with your replies!

I was about to edit my last reply to what follows, but before I could say "Jack", let alone "Jack Robinson", you had replied!

I misunderstood what you said last and thought you meant the options on Right Click 7-zip.

Yes, it did zip to what you said. I haven't tried to open it yet in my hurry to prevent you replying to my waste-of-time previous reply!

Thanks. I will try and see if it opens and come back and let you know.

No, it didn't open. There was a message saying that it opened as a Read Only (the original wasn't Read Only) file and if I wanted to open it, I needed to save a copy which I did, but it only opens Microsoft Access to a blank blue screen.

    Yes, Windows XP.

The Read Only didn't open either.

I guess I'm a bit lost now. Does the .accdb open correctly with ac2007?

Yes, the unzipped one does, but not the zipped one.

I created a new database and imported everything into it and the Compressed (zipped) Folder worked with it - but I wasn't able to 7-zip the new database either.

I have got it zipping now with Add to Filename, but then it won't open and allows me to try via Microsoft Access, but it doesn't open even with selecting Microsoft Access.

Is it possible that some or other security somewhere is too high? If so what should I do to alter that?

I have just managed to get the copy 7-zipped - but it wouldn't work on Add to Filename.7z - but it DID work on Add to Filename.zip AND IT OPENS!!!

This whole thing is all very strange.

WinXP will let you open a zip file and look inside as if it were a normal folder. When you try and run the file inside it will be read only. It must be "extracted" first to run normally.
