    Problems with memo fields

I use memo fields to collect my user's research notes. According to Microsoft, Memo fields are suppose to allow up to 65,000 characters. The field allows me to type whole paragraphs but when I exit the field it only saves the first few sentences. Did I not enable some setting correctly?

I don't believe it's that it's 'not saving' the record, it's that it won't display in your table structure more than x amount of characters (I don't know what that limit is). I'm not 100% sure I have this right but if you were to display the memo on a report you should get the full set of notes. Are you just looking at a table/form or are you actually looking at a report based on your data?

Nope, it is not SAVING. I can type again and again and look at it with different displays and the information is just not there. Field will only save a few sentences

    http://bytes.com/topic/access/answer...255-characters

Count your characters, I imagine it's 255, so if you're using a form to do your data entry a way around this problem is to create a subform that just contains a datasheet view of the memo field only, then add that subform to your main form and link appropriately. I don't have much experience with memo fields, just remembered there was some issue with reports/forms not being able to handle more than 255 characters.

It doesn't save when entering from any view (form, report, subform, data sheet, etc)!!!!!

I'm assuming it is some setting on the field that is preventing me from saving properly (why that setting would exist is beyond me but since this is Access it is entirely possible).

I've never had issue saving long text strings more than 255 characters to memo field. No special form or control settings. If you want to provide db for analysis, follow instructions at bottom of my post.
How to attach file: http://www.accessforums.net/showthread.php?t=70301 To provide db: copy, remove confidential data, run compact & repair, zip w/Windows Compression.

I solved it. In the format field was "@". I have no idea how it got there or what it means. But after I deleted it both in the field settings and format settings, the memo field would save everything.
