    Its still there....
If creating a new query, click Create...Query Design first then Design...view...SQL View

Having said that, why MS still haven't provided a way of opening a query in SQL view directly using code is beyond me

You are opening the query, at least in one view or another, yes? You can't get to any view directly from an unopened query from the nav pane unless you right click on it, so I'm not sure why you're having an issue. Otherwise, I see 3 options in the ribbon drop down for Views if a select query is open in one view or another.

Attached is a screenshot of the query design menu using the Northwind desktop database in Access 2016

If you can't see SQL view, perhaps you are looking at an Access Web database where VBA is not available and nor is SQL view
The screenshot below is from an web database (opened in A2010)

ok the standard northwind traders db has the standard 'sql view'
I got this access demo 'version' of northwind called "goods" from ms

    https://support.office.com/en-us/art...__toc280353100

this is the one where there is no sql view, perhaps there is some way to create queries using only the access UI
that doesn't translate to its equivalent sql? or because its a "template" and not an actual access db?
see image below what I get, this is the downloaded db from the link
    above with access 2016

As I indicated in my previous post, you have downloaded a web database

The title line of the link you provided is:
Cut expenses, manage inventory, and ship effectively by using the Goods web database template
As Access web databases are being deprecated at the end of this month, I would bin that & download the desktop version instead

    You're welcome

Somewhat surprised that you can still download web database templates from MS site!
