    Not A Valid Bookmark!

I had some bad luck with an Access 2016 file I was working on as a new user. I had the table set up and also created a query, a fairly complicated form, and a few reports. It was going along nicely! Then..... I was playing around with seeing how to add records to the existing table and ended up recopying all the existing rows yet again, which took the table from 14500 rows to 29000 rows. When I did this, the program said that it couldn't undo this operation because of low memory, but I thought it would be fine since I would not "save" the file and all would be back to normal. Not true. When I closed the file it did not give me an option to save, it just closed. So when I opened it again, all the double records were still there! A bit panicky I closed and right clicked on the file and was given the opportunity by windows properties to go back to a previous version from the day before. Eureka I thought, good to go. So I chose to do this. Then when I tried to open the file again, all I get is a message that says "Not A Valid Bookmark" and it never opens. All my work apparently down the tubes. Unless you guys can help a neophite some way? To add insult to injury, I also found after all this that my backup service iDrive had apparently been deleted off this computer at my work a month before by someone!! Can't win here, but hopefully someone has some way to fix the bookmark issue. Thanks very much in advance. Mark

    need more background information

    is this a web app?
is the db split (i.e. tables in a separate file)?
what is the backend? .accdb? sharepoint or something else?
what is the code that runs when you open the db?
can you open the file without opening a form? (hold down shift key when opening file)
why did you not just delete the additional records?

This is the desktop version of Office 365.
I'm almost positive that I went ahead and made the db a part of the file rather than a separate file.
Not sure what you mean by backend...sorry. The file has a .accdb extension if that's what you're asking.
I don't know what code runs when you open the db....again sorry. Is there a way for me to determine this for you?
I tried holding the shift key down when opening. No change.
Just deleting the additional records should have been what I did before closing the file. I just thought that when I closed the file without saving that it would come up again without all the changes I had just done. Wrong on my part of course.

Thank you for looking at this. I really appreciate it. Any other ideas, I'm all ears.

    Try this.
    Create a new blank database.
On the ribbon, click external data, then Access.
Navigate to the bad database and try to import the table, form, reports etc.
See if the new database works.

Oh, yeah. Before any of that, try this first. Use Windows explorer to go to the folder holding the original database. See if there is a file like xxxxxxx.iaccdb. If so, delete it. Try the old database now. If no go, try above.

Before you do anything make a copy/backup/ZIP of the database.

Before you do anything make a copy/backup/ZIP of the database.

Before you do anything make a copy/backup/ZIP of the database.

Now that you have lots of copies you can try to recover.

TIP: I always make a ZIP of any database before I open it.

The invalid bookmark usually mean you have a corrupted database.

I agree with davegri that you should create a new blank databases and importing the object from the corrupt one.. I would import one object type at a time. First tables, then queries, etc. You will probably have object that will not import. Those you will have to import from another back up copy.

Ok, did the backup first, then looked for the xxxxxxx file. Not there. Then opened blank database and tried to Access import. The very first message I got was the old one.... NOT A VALID BOOKMARK. I'm now guessing I'm SOL on this one.

Nope no good. Hard to believe one can't fix a file that has a "bookmark" error. Sounds trivial but I'm sure it's not. Ok all, thanks very much for trying to help. I really appreciate it! Mark

    tip for the future:

    1. split the db when you start developing forms
    2. take regular backups
