    Date Function

Wow am I not doing this right. I always thought if I had a series of dates for a certain month if I did first of I would get the first date or last of and get the last date. But I discovered the first of or last of give the first entered or last entered. For instance:

    polnum Date
    000000 2/23/2010
    000000 10/1/2010
    000000 11/30/2010
    000000 1/25/2010

If I say I want the last of because I want 11/30/2010 it will give me 1/25/2010 cuz that was last date entered. First of gives me 2/23/2010 and not 1/25/2010 cuz 2/23/2010 was the first entered. I am doing a group by policy number where I want 1 of the 000000 and the last date modified which would be the 11/30/2010. But doing last or first does not give me the 11/30/2010. Wow did I just get a lesson in what first and last really do when you are doing groupby.
