    Newbe question on table setup

    Hi friends!

    I know this will sound strange, but need help setting up a table(s) for following:

    I want to make a genealogy program in MS Access. Now this I know how to do. One table of people with a field for father code and a field for mother code which would be filled with the corresponding codes of the people in the table that are the mother and father. But in my project each individual can have multiple mothers and fathers! (don't ask why at this point&#129322.

    And this possibility continues as we go back, higher up the family tree.

    How should I setup the people table(s)?

    Thank you very much!

    Then I suppose you need a related table so each parent will be a record. Might have a yes/no field to flag genetic parent.
    How to attach file: http://www.accessforums.net/showthread.php?t=70301 To provide db: copy, remove confidential data, run compact & repair, zip w/Windows Compression.

    A little more detailed answer:
    you have a table for all persons, like
    tblPersons: PersonID, Forename, LastName, DOB, ...;
    and a table where all parents (or kids when you prefer this instead parents) of every person are registered, like:
    tblPersonParents: PersonParentID, PersonID, ParentID.

    You might also need to qualify the type of parent - birth, foster, adopt etc in the second table

    Wouldn't that be just 1 field that indicates, mother or father, or anything else they make up these days?

    When you mention genealogy I think of this pedigree example.

    Hardly seems simple to me. Also, aren't there tools designed specifically for this? My brother was deep into this stuff and he used one that was on line and was able to make reports with whatever he was using.

    There is a lot of auxiliary data that I need to enter like books written by the people and other information and the genealogy programs are not tailored for this
