If the variable isn't assigned a value, the email should still open? I think you've already hit the nail on the head in post 8. As I already mentioned, code worked for me IF I made sure it ran and substituted something for the form reference. Since these suggestions/questions are not being addressed I think I will move on.

Must not be...added the message box and nothing happened.
I tried the after update code in the subform and the main form.

The variable I have in the main form and subform are both changing, so I know that's working, but it's not triggering the after update event.

Are you manually changing the value in that control? That's the only time the after update event will fire.

Then perhaps you need to put the code that you have in the After Update event at the end of the procedure that changes the value of the control.
If this helped, please click the star at the bottom left of this posting and add to my reputation . Many thanks.

Apparently post 8 wasn't clear, that the change/update events don't fire unless the user manually changes the value?

Code is not running. I think it's because it's a calculated field.
How does one get the code to run off of a field that is changed with a formula?

As has been mentioned, you put it behind the control(s) the user is changing. If your formula is A + B = C, you put it behind the controls for A and B. If there are more than one, I'd create a function and call it from both.
