Syntax Error in Query Expression on filter

I have an Access 2007 form with a simple subform on it. When I open the form and click Sort on the column header for any column on the subform, I get a "Syntax error in query expression" warning, with a description of the SQL query. Click OK and the sort drop down then appears as it should. The subform is simply linked via a single column to the parent.

I created the form using form wizard

when you say "the sort drop down then appears "

in 07 the AZ or ZA sort is in the ribbon and isn't a drop down - can you clarify?
