    Microsoft Access Record-Locking Information

Just recently I have begun having a problem with a shared Access 2010 database. It has been working fine for many years now, but just last Thursday 12/16/21, we began having a problem with the Record-Locking "database" that open when you open a database. What used to allow 10 people to work in it will not allow anyone work in it now. Even with every one out of it, I still get an error message that says the file is in use. Since I don't control the server it is on, I don't get to keep my own backups. I'm concerned that it has become corrupted. Is there any way to get it to realize no one is using it?

can you clarify what you mean by 'shared' - is the database split? does each user have their own copy of the front end? If that is not the case, chances are the db is corrupted. To free up the locking key, you will probably need to arrange for the server to be shut down and restarted.

Other things to consider - how big is the db on the server? - if approaching 2Gb you are approaching the limits of the access back end - you could try compact/repair to try to reduce it, otherwise you will either need to archive some data or upsize to sql server (the express version is free).

If the db is corrupted, then it is unlikely you will be able to open it or recover anything so you will need to talk to your server administrator to get a backup from them.

Each user has their own copy of the front end. The Back end database is around 33K kbs.
I can't get the back end to open in order to do a Compack/Repair because it thinks it's being used.

Thank you for the help, my boss if finding out who the server folks are so we can see about getting an older version that, hopefully, is not corrupt. (or months old)

OK so my initial thoughts may be off - can you copy the BE to a local drive and open it there?

Could this be due to the new MS bug?

Ajax - No I can't copy it because it thinks someone is using it. I'm fairly sure that it has been corrupted.
I'm praying this doesn't happen to my other databases.

Welshgasman - The update that that fix is talking about has not been pushed yet.

Welshgasman - we don't have that update on our computers. Our admins haven't done that update yet. So since we don't have it....

You should be able to copy it from windows explorer even if it is 'in use'.

If you can't, that implies you don't have the appropriate rights which, since it worked before, implies someone in server admin has changed those rights. To test, do you have, or can you put, another db on the server, even a test one and see if that works for you?

The database will not let me copy it from explorer because it's "in use". Very frustrating.
I have others already on that server that are working just fine. I have full rights to the server for my top level folder, but not the server itself.
Boss is getting me an external so I can start backing up instead of having to rely on the IT folks.
It could be that either some permissions were changed or some other security update is causing the issue.
    Thanks for the help.

The symptoms are exactly what a client of mine was experiencing.

The latest update has fixed it.
If you go to the account option in O365 the update should be listed, waiting to be "activated", even if you don't have automatic updates enabled.

I'm still having record locking issues...... I think due to updates?

When that last update came out, I removed and the system worked fine again until today. Yesterday - no issues.

Today, only one person can use at a time. I get a record-locking error saying a table still in use (even though it isn't.)

I have to restart everything to get rid of the record locking file and then can only use a shared db on one pc at a time.

Anyone - please..... Need help with this one. Over my head....

    Thanks so much.
