The Columbarium (a place where one can place an Urn of ashes of a deceased person) will be associated with only one church.

Not everyone is familiar with a columbarium. The Columbarium is where an Urn of ashes of a deceased person is inurned, as opposed to being in a casket in a graveyard. The Columbarium will be associated with only one church.

I have a database that created the data reports for http://www.bibby-gazette.co.uk/
In that DB I have 59 ships. I do not have a database for each ship. I have a table of ships and the PK of each one is in a table called Links.

That Links table is the key to the whole database, as it links Dates to Ships to Crew to Rank at that time.

That layout is the sort of thing you should be looking at.

    inurnment
That was the one I had to look up. Should have recognized that it was like 'interment'. If you can't make the connection with WGM's suggestion let us know. I think the only missing piece right now is are you keeping an owner history? If the niche ownership is transferred are you keeping a history of that in the db or just changing the current owner details to the new owner?

EDIT - as I think about it, other questions seem to arise. Is the owner always the same as the one who was/will be inurned or does that not matter?

-we drop the name of the previous owner and keep the name of the current owner.
-the person interned could be anyone the owner gives the Church permission to intern.

thanks for you interest and involvement.

thanks, Welshgasman. Given the information of the data we need to collect/keep how many tables would you suggest? I don't have experience with linking tables, but I will energetically learn.

Well you had a pretty good start.
The owner of the urn would have their primary key stored with the urn data?

TBH I would probably have a tables for

    Walls (10 records)
    Niche (80 records)
    Owner (up to 1600?)
    Space (rename that, 2 records)

Then the main table would hold a record of the PKs from all those tables, along with your dates etc?

That is pretty much what my links table does?

However others here are much better at database normalisation than I.

This is incomplete but I don't have time to work on it today to figure out how to have inured who are owners and inured who are not. Inured who are not owners will need a spot for personal data too, but you don't want to repeat that info in the same table for owners who are not inured.
Since there's no need for owner history, that will just involve an update on owner table.

So it's here if anyone wants to take a crack at it in the meantime.

How many churches will the dB be associated with?

Will there ALWAYS be exactly 10 Walls in a Columbarium?
Will there ALWAYS be exactly 80 Niches to a Wall?
Will there ALWAYS be exactly 2 Urns per Niche?

-there will always be 10 walls
-there will always be 80 niches to a wall
-a niche can hold 1 or 2 urns and the designation of Space "A" and Space "B" really have no meaning except that a person either paid more to hold 2 urns or less to hold 1 urn. It dosn't really designate a position within a niche.l
-there is only one Church associated with the Columbarium.

    -I have created 5 tables:
    ---the wall
---the current owner of the wall/niche
---the contact info for the current owner (someone to contact if current owner is not available)
---the 1st decedent that has been inurned
---the 2nd decedent that has been inurned (assuming there is a 2nd)

The Wall table is linked to the other 4 tables with the Contact table being linked to the Owner table. All tables have the "wall" as the PK.

Does this make sense or is reasonable?

    Thanks for your help.

that a person either paid more to hold 2 urns or less to hold 1 urn.
does this mean there could be two owners of a niche, one for each space?

OK, will you (the OP) use the dB to track the Wall, Niche, space(s) for more than 1 Church/Columbarium?

    @moke 123,
    Better??
