Form fields not accepting data entry - how to troubleshoot?

    Hello,

I have one issue and one question.

First: I cannot manage a query or form that will allow more than one field to have data entry. All the other form fields “beep” at me and don’t permit entry or edit.
From either of two tables, or the queries created from them, no problem to create a form (any form, wizard, no wizard, tried them all). But then, I can only enter the first value and read-only all the other values. New record only permits entry of first value. I have to do all my entries at the table level and there I have question. (See Second below)

I’ve set the forms property to Data Entry Yes.

Second: I’m missing something about relationships. In a one-many relationship, where one document has many versions, I don’t understand how to make the form that keeps them connected during data entry. I can create a new record (with just one field; see FIrst problem above) with the form, but unable to use the form to populate the rest of the fields.

I can query the two tables and see the data , which makes me think my relationships are correctly defined.

If this isn’t enough description of the issues, What can I show you to help illustrate the issue to augment my words?

I swear I’ve read the Access 2019 bible front to back a bunch of times now, and not seeing what I’m not seeing.

    Appreciate all input.

    thanks
    Amy

Sounds like a lot of issues to address thru text exchanges here at the forum.
It would be best to post your DB for analysis. A good person here will be able to zero in on the problems in the db and post it back, then explain the corrections, or will
show you how to fix your copy.

"post your DB" - means exactly what? I can provide a relationship report, and object definitions. Is that what I should post? As images? or links to a dropbox file? thanks.

Looks like the form is based on a query that is not updatable. To post the db means to remove any sensitive info from the tables, run a compact and repair, then zip it and upload it to the forum (use the Go Advanced instead of Post Quick Reply and you'll see the button to Manage Attachments).

I’ve set the forms property to Data Entry Yes.
That means you can only add new records.? The most misnamed property on a form.

It's sure a barely covered property in the Access 2019 Bible.
"determines whether form opens to a new blank record, not showing any saved records" is all I can find about this. It's been a challenge getting any useful info on this. From microsoft, i get this https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...0-4aa4acd8fe87 which gives some clues about other properties to look at.

Has anyone got a link to a resource that really dives deep into properties?

    thanks

all the properties, methods and events you could want to know about built in objects of Office programs, including some that are not exposed in the property sheet.

That's another great link! You're my new favorite person today.
    ;-)

I have to say, every reply to this thread gave me an insight into both my originally described issues and I'm happy to report that I have forms working as I need them to, and, a laundry list of to-dos that I didn't know about.

    Thanks again!

I'm honored. That sure beats some of the responses one can get around here.
