Access Database Lockdown

Is anyone aware if an Access DB can be locked down? I need to lock a database down in a shared drive so that users can not navigate and view salary related tables.

In addition to the question above. By encrypting the Database will I limit functionality? Meaning if I have reports generated in Excel via Access, will they no longer be decipherable?

Is the application split to FrontEnd and BackEnd?

We have a Front End user template that updates tables in Access and Backend Output reports.

All forms and reports should be in the FrontEnd. Only tables with the data should be in the BackEnd. You can have more than one BackEnd and move your sensitive data to a separate encripted BackEnd.

Misunderstood FE/BE - Everything is FE as we do not provide users their own FE MDB. Users have their own excel "Template" that contains VBA updating Access when a change is made. Access then recalculates the queries and updates the Output reports (also excel).

I would say securing the tables from prying eyes with this setup *may* not be possible.

Are you aware if there may be a way via ODBC?

I'm not aware of any. Of course that does *not* mean they don't exist!
