Question Updating Tables. Press and Hold ESC to stop...

I have several databases split into a front end and back end. Both reside in the same location on a network drive. When I hope the front end I will receive the message in the bottom left of the screen "Updating Tables. Press and Hold ESC to stop...". This almost freezes up the database and it could take 15-20 minutes before it releases again for use. It will then release for 30 seconds - 3 minutes before displaying the message again and freezing up. I have tried holding down ESC but that does not appear to work. How can I get rid of this? This did not occur until we upgraded to Office 2007. Nothing about the Database has changed since we upgraded either. Any suggestions will be much appreciated as this is very frustrating for me and the users.

Every user should have their own copy of the FrontEnd of their own local machine.

Unfortunately that is not an option.

We have users that are all over the State of North Carolina and the database slows to a crawl when they try to log on out in the field. We are using Citrix for them to log onto the database.
