Does that mean 1 to 10 characters? I would use a text field, with a custom generated "number".

Not if you are OK with the possibility of the number (autonumber) going negative....... (even if the probability is low )
(Long integers range from -2,147,483,648 to +2,147,483,647. )

if the (autonumber) went negative i don't believe this would have a major affect on the db the way its set up.



I'm always keen to rectify possible issues if i got the know how, can you point me in the right direction on how to organise a custom generated number.

I am concerned about how much data is in the db at the moment and the work involved to keep all the order numbers, jobnumbers etc all the same.

thanks June7 looking into as we speak... i was given the dmax code at the start of building but being green with code back then had no idea how to use it and couldn't get my head around around it.
