command or action " isn't available

Hey guys, I'm new to Access and my hair is turning gray already. Among other problems I been having when I try to do a hyperlink I am getting this message: The command or action " isn't available now.
    * you may be in a read-only database or an unconverted database from an earlier version.
*The type of object the action applies to isn't currently selected or isn't in the active view.

Use only those commands and macro actions that are currently available for this database.

What does this mean? If I change the column to OLE I can insert a picture no problem but won't let me do a hyperlink. I have 2007 and 2010 I've tried both and get the same error, I started from scratch and made a new table and still get the same error. Please help, Thanks.

have you set up the Trusted Locations? if this question is unclear to you - you will want to purchase an Access textbook available at any big box bookstore or Amazon.

setting up the Trust Locations is always the first step in Access07/10.

not sure what else to do, i've turned everything on:

    Trusted docs- Allow
    Add-Ins- (nothing is checked)?
    Active-X: Enable all controls
    Macro Settings: Enable all
    DEP Settings: Checked

    setting up the Trust Locations.

you need to set those up for both the FE and BE file locations.

not 100% sure this solves your problem but it is definitely the starting point.
