    How to avoid creating database which ends up having too many blank fields

    The database I've inherited has too many blank fields. What's a better design than this:

    It's interesting how the year and initials fields are one-to-one. Notwithstanding that it makes no sense to me, then the suggestion would be to have these two fields in 1 table, but it needs a PK (autonumber?) so that those values can be how you link the records with tblEdition, tblVolumes and tblSeries. tblVolumes would only have one record, based on your post. All of the secondary tables would be linked by the FK from tbl1 autonumber.
