I am unable to open a database I've been using for more than a year. I get an error message:
"Unrecongnized database format 'C:\Users\John\Documenrs\DOCTORS KNIVES with sold knives marked.accdb' "
What am I doing wrong?

bit more background required to avoid speculation - but here are a few thoughts/actions to try
1. what has happened since the last time you ran it? upgraded windows/office? something else?
2. hold down the shift key to open without starting your main form/autoexec macro
3. open a new db and copy all objects
4. does a backup work OK?
5. is that your real path? there are limits to how long the path name can be. try shortening the db name
My first guess is that this is a spelling error
Do you always have spaces in your path and file names?Documenrs
When was you last backup taken?

1. 2-3 months since I last used it.
2. do not understand "starting your main form/autoexec macro"
3. can't copy objects without opening the db, I think
4. I cloned the HD about a month ago, but I'm not eager to open the PC case and swap HDs.
I shortened the name and eliminated spaces in the name. No luck.

Hi
try creating a new database and then select external data, access and browse to your database if it does give you the option to import tables, queries etc then select everything and import the lot.
Holding down the shift key as you double click the database bypasses everything that loads as the database loads so all your startup files wont run - but the databasewill load.
For what it's worth do not swap the hard drives unless you are 100% sure you know what you are doing. I'd slot it into an external box and then view the contents that way nothing is written to your drive.
Also you mauy see some backups
