open pdf viewer without opening internet explorer

Sorry, posted too soon. Immediately thought an ACCESS code solution was needed. Found the answer inside IE (8) where IE pdf display can be disabled. Below is what I posted

Recordset uses a table with an unbound form with image controls to display thumbnail jpgs of file formats associated with each record
    - TIF or
    - PDF (first page)
Thumbnails are created when the TIF/PDF are created

At run time, full pathway to each record associated file is placed in the picture property of the associated image control
Clicking a thumbnail places the pathway (in the picture property) in the hyperlink address property
    - Files do open
    - - - TIF in Irfanview (default image viewer)
    - - - PDF with Adobe Reader

PDF problem is Internet Explorer opens first then Adobe Reader inside IE. Takes a long time to open

How can a pdf viewer open without opening IE? (Computer is stand alone without internet connection but I have not tried uninstalling IE)
