Question Basic question on table design data type: lookup

    Hello,

I am new to Access....I have created a table and imported data from excel. I have a now several fields and records. I go to design view and modify data type of a field to lookup....but access is deleting existing data for that field.

For example my field is manufacturer and i have now 50 records for that field. The 50 records are having 12 manufacturer's. I would like to add 51 records and it should have lookup from drop down so that i can select a manufacturer.

Is it possible to have lookup for already existing data?

My question may be very basic or may be I am conceptually wrong. please guide me.

I NEVER build lookup in table. http://access.mvps.org/access/lookupfields.htm

Instead of data entry directly in table, build a form. Use combobox or listbox on form.

If the data already saved does not fit the lookup structure then it won't show. Remove the lookup settings and see if existing data shows.

I also NEVER use multi-value fields, just mentioning in case you are.
How to attach file: http://www.accessforums.net/showthread.php?t=70301 To provide db: copy, remove confidential data, run compact & repair, zip w/Windows Compression.
