They are not "linked" tables in Access terms.
Import copies data into the database, Linked leaves the data in Excel but allows it to be used in the database.

The code I made shows how you can parse

    "00GY20130001234" to give you "GY-13-00001234"

I must admit I'm not really following your procedure. It seems you are doing a lot of intervention to use some data from Excel.

Query trouble with Left Join on' Is Null' condition

I guess-here is a map of what I am doing. Ithink i see what you mean:
I havelinked both the files to the database using the linked file manager, so to mymind, they are linked in the access sense of the word. I am importing the datafrom a 'linked' .csv file via an append query into the table 'TblDirectdatabase'.

Thedata in Book1.csv, I am not importing as such. From what you are saying, if Iuse your code to the query to pick up the data straight from the .csv file then this parse code would chop and reform the data rather than my convoluted query method. Yes-in that respect, you arespot on-I am doing a lot of intervention, but it's all a learning curve. Untilyesterday, the concept of 'parsing' by code was new to me. I will make somechanges on Monday and see what that does for me. Thanks forthe input.

    See this link office.microsoft.com/en-us/access-help/import-or-link-to-data-in-a-text-file-HA001232227.aspx
and look at the part about Link to a Text File -see if it applies.
