Adding Auto Number field

I have an inventory database with a table--tblInventory. I made the Description field the Primary Key. I have 250 records in the table. I realize now that I my work would be easier if I had added an Auto Number field and made it the Primary Key. Can I add an Auto Number field to the table and make it the Primary Key without damaging the data in the existing records? Will that add an Auto Number to the existing records? How?

Create a *new* table just like the old table but add the AutoNumber field and make it the PrimaryKey field. Then append your old table to this new table.
