Red face 2007 MDE will not Open in Access 2003

I have an Access 2003 database that I work on using Access 2007. When I get ready to save it for distribution, I click on the Database Tools Ribbon and then on "Make MDE". It appears to make the MDE database.

However, when I try to open it in Access 2003, it says it cannot because it was created in a higher program.

My work-around is to take the Access 2003 MDB to a computer with Access 2003 and make the MDE file. However, this is a pain.

Am I correct that Access 2007 will not make a working MDE file from a 2003 database. Or at least an MDE that can only work from Access 2007.

It this is correct why put the MDE button there?

I haven't tried it but I would guess your results are by design. It has always been the case in the past that you need to use the correct version in order to make an mde.

I hope someone will try it.

I hope someone will try it and verify my problem.

It doesn't make sense to say "Make MDE" when dealing with a 2003 MDB database. If it only makes databases that open with Access 2007, wouldn't they leave it "Make ACCDE" as they do with Acees 2006 databases?

I finally figured out the right search words and have a verification:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/926712

As I understand it, I can design Access 2003 databases in Access 2007; I can save them and they work in Access 2003; but If I want to protect the code in a MDE file that works in Access 2003, I must use Access 2003 even though Access 2007 says it will make MDE files. "This is behavior by design!!!!"
