    Problem creating linked table

i am trying to create an access table linked to an excel file.

the excel file has 256,000 kb, 15 columns, 6,400 rows.

when i go to CREATE, DESIGN VIEW in access and try to create the new linked access table i get this message -

"MICROSOFT ACCESS HAS ENCOUNTERED A PROBLEM AND NEEDS TO CLOSE". I CLICK OK AND THEN IT SAYS
"REPAIR MY OPEN DATABASE AND RESTART MS ACCESS".

I CLICK ON OK AND THEN SAVE THE BACKUP FILE. THE FILE DISAPPEARS. I START OVER AGAIN AND THE SAME PROCESS STARTS AGAIN AND AGAIN.

Not sure what you are doing. Links to Excel are established with the Import/Link wizard, not Create>Design.

I am using Windows XP Pro and Access 2010. I cannot find the Import/Link wizard you refer to in my program.

It's on the External Data tab of the ribbon.

I followed your instructions. I was previously starting with a blank page but this time I tried a blank website page and that seemed to help. The Import Link Wizard seemed to work ok. But after a few minutes the message appeared "Unexpected error from external database driver (1)" and shut down.

Not familiar with that error. What do you mean by 'starting with a blank page' and 'tried a blank website page'? What does 'blank page' have to do with link/import Excel file? What exactly are you doing?

I am trying to create a database linked to an existing excel file. When I open access I see available templates, including "blank database" and "blank web database."

I am now going to look up the unexpected error on the internet.

So you selected New > Blank Database and created the db file? Import/Link with wizard to Excel should be possible, assuming the Excel sheet structure is suitable. Do you want to provide the Excel file for analysis?

Can attach files to post. The Attachment Manager is located below the Advanced Editor box. Click Go Advanced below post window.

But if the wizard is not available and/or even a simple Excel worksheet won't link, could be corrupted application. Reinstall Access?
