Macro to open form; apply filter but what to do when filtered field is null?

I have a form to enter available training classes with a command button to open another form in order to enter class dates for that specific class. I am filtering the second form based on the courseid (primary key) on the first form which is an autonumber generated when I enter the class information. This filter works great if I already have some dates entered for a specific class; however, if this is the first time I enter class dates, the form leaves this field null. How do I get the courseid that is autogenerated on the previous form to show in the new form automatically?

Have you considered a form/subform arrangement?
