    i have tried to put "expr1: nz([MaxOfDateofSale],'No Sale Made')"
    in the a blank field in the query but when i run it it asks for the max date? why is that?

    Because that's not the name of the field. Try

    Nz(Max(tblSales.DateofSale),'No Sale Made') AS MaxOfDateofSale

    Try changing Group By to Expression. If that doesn't work, can you post the db here?

    thanks that sloved it, i then tried the report and noted it needed a text box called exp1 (variable) to display the no sale text. its all working now. thank you for all you time and help
