    Time interval calculation

I have a table containing a date field and I want to formulate a query with a calculated field which contains the number of days between the date in the present record and the date in the immediately preceding record. This is meat and drink to Excel but I can't see a way of doing it in Access; can anybody else?

Thanks very much for your remarkably prompt, very comprehensive and very helpful response. The example you cited was almost exactly what I wanted. I was aware of the existence of sub-queries but had never used one and the idea of doing so would probably not have occurred. - Problem solved!
