Creating sequential numbers conditional on another field

    Hi All,

I am new to ACCESS & to this forum.

I have a problem (please see table below & attachment)

DOC1 shows three columns, Dept column is in ascending order, what I want to do is add a numbering column like DOC2 to identify individual dept lines.

please can you tell me if that is possible

    DOC1
    Dept Subdept Amount
    AAA
    A1 75
    AAA
    A3 45
    AAA
    A2 13
    BBB
    B2 16
    BBB B1 4
    CCC
    C2 22
    CCC
    C1 20
    CCC C3 15

    DOC2
    No
    Dept Subdept Amount
    1
    AAA A1 75
    2 AAA A3 45
    3
    AAA A2 13
    1
    BBB B2 16
    2
    BBB B1 4
    1
    CCC C2 22
    2
    CCC C1 20
    3
    CCC C3 15

    Thanks for your help

    Use auto numbers

You can add an auto number field as the first field in the table and it will start at 1 and number the lines. I have made the changes to your file and attached the update. I hope this is what you need.

Okay, I just noticed that the numbers reset when the dept changes so the fix I posted will not work. Sorry.
Do you need the numbers stored in the table or just printed on a document?
