Data will never exceed 255 characters? Can you just change the data type of the field in source table?
Try concatenating an empty string to the memo field, worked when I tested it.

Never will exceed! And unfortunately I can't modify the source table.
How would I do this? I am not following?
there's always the coding method! and if I'm not mistaken....I believe Allen Browne has an article about this issue somewhere doesn't he?
why convert anyway? what gives?
I will have to search for Allen Browne's article. I need to convert so that I can link on two fields in a query. I can't join memo to text, and since changing it in the source table is out of the question, I was just going to do a make table query and change the memo to text.
Expression to concatenate empty string:
[fieldname] & ""
