Sharing a database without a server

    Hi all,

At work a few of us all need to access the database to edit/update etc and at the moment only one of us can use it at once.
We are getting a server in the near future so we will all be able to access it at the same time but I was wondering if there is an alternative way to do this in the meantime?

I have been looking at "shared folders" but am unsure if they are suitable or how they work.

Any help/advice would me much appreciated!

    Thanks,

    Adam

If you have a shared network drive that all of you can access, you will be able to all use the database at once. The best way to do this is to split out the front and back ends, and place the single back end database (just the tables- nothing else) on the shared network folder. Then you put a copy of the front end (everything except the tables) on each user's local machine, and import a reference to the back end into each one.

    Thanks for your reply,

Would this work if I simply put the whole database in a shared network folder on the network drive or is it vital to split it up?

It will work that way too, although that way is less common. However, the more users you have using the program at the same time, the more likely you might be to have issues. Everyone can use the same database, however individual records are locked according to who is editing them at the moment. So that should work for you.

And if it doesn't, try putting it in runtime mode by changing the file extension from .accdb to .accdr. However, this will lock you out of the ribbon and navigation pane so you will need to have developed a UI.
