    .accde / .accdb issue

I just created an .accde database off my original and I'm a bit confused about the result. Both databases are working just fine but there is an issue with the locking that I don't quite understand.

According to the help files within Access, the .accde is supposed to have the tables locked and cannot be opened in design mode. This would have to be accomplished by opening the original database, .accdb.

This is backwards for me. I can open tables in design mode within the .accde file but not the .accdb file.

But, the .accde icon shown a small lock, while the .accdb icon does not.

What did I do wrong? Or, am I not understanding all of this correctly?

Below is a pdf screenshot for reference.

    Thanks.

Somewhere you got misinformed. In an ACCDE file (MDE too) users, if they can get to the design area (navigation pane, database window) can change the design of tables, queries, and macros. So we use other means to keep them out of there. The compiling to ACCDE (or MDE for earlier versions) only limits design view access to forms, reports, and VBA.

As for not being able to open the design view in your main accdb file, you have to change design in the backend file, not the frontend file.

    Thanks.

Looks like I need to do a bit more research on the subject. Without going into detail, what topic should I look into if I wanted to allow multiple users to access a database on our local server within the company, or as you put it, "we use other means to keep them out of there"?
