Sequencial numbering

Hi Everyone,
I'm new, I mean really, really new. I have been using the forums to help with a database I'm building for RA (return authorization) numbers with great success, but now I need some help. I would like to have the RA number on my form sequence, ie...2000,2001, etc. What I'd like to have happen is when the form opens for a new record, the RA number automatically changes to the next number in the FE and that number is reflected on the BE. I wrote: =Nz(DMax(“[RA #]”,”RA Log Book”),1999)+1 but this isn't working. I know I have a long way to go to understand all this, but I find it very interesting. I appreciate any help you can give.

Need to use VBA code to create and save a custom unique identifer. Why do you need this? Can you just use Autonumber datatype field?
