    Link Excel to Access problem

    I am using A2007 with W7

I linked my Access file to a worksheet, but am unable to edit values on the linked table. No message, just won't allow it. When I open the excel file independently of Acccess, it works fine. Eventually, after some combo of events that I don't understand yet, I can't open it for editing and I get some message about in use by somebody else. (there is nobody else.) I downloaded a test mdb and xls file, written in A97. that was posted in this forum in 2009, but that wouldn't work either. Is there some special action that has to be taken wit A2007? Hours wasted, help appreciated.

Using excel as frontend to edit the data in access is troublesome and
    with lots of restrictions.

The other way to use access as frontend to edit data in excel is even more tricky and painstaking.
It is not recommended to do so either.
