Access 2013 Not Responding During Query - White Screen

I'm fairly new to Access and am running Windows 10 Pro 63-bit and Access 2013 - 32 bit version as part of Office 2013 Pro. I have an Access database with linked tables to our ERP system files via an ODBC connection. The ERP database is a Providex database.

When I run queries, the ribbon area and the document window will sometimes go blank (white) and only the navigation pane is populated. The file path line above the ribbon will also show (Not Responding) on the end of the text. This may last for a few seconds or for several minutes. (I have the same issue with Excel going blank (white) and not responding when I pull certain tables in from Access.) Sometimes the query will complete and Access will return to normal. Other times, I have to restart Access.

When the query does work correctly, I'll see the blue spinning circle for period of time and the query will populate (nothing goes white.)

My first guess is some issue with the ERP files being in use or locked.

Any comments on if this is normal behavior and any possible workarounds?

that can happen, the query takes a long time and cant redraw the screen.
    nor allow any activity.
just leave it be until done.

BUT, some queries can be so complex that it may never finish. Lots of joins.
