I cannot use the wizard because I really need it to be displayed in a familiar format and searchable
This makes no sense at all. I don't know where you're getting some of these notions from, but all you need to do has been suggested already.
I wish you good luck, but I get the feeling I can't help further the way this is going. It's been 15 posts for something that should have taken no more than 4 or 5 max.

Perhaps it would be better for you to post a copy of your db. Perhaps we could then make the adjustments required easier than we can explain to you.
If this helped, please click the star at the bottom left of this posting and add to my reputation . Many thanks.

    Loup,

Here is a link to a free youtube video that addresses your issue (at least as I understand it).
Found through google using youtube msaccess locking controls on forms/subforms

I really need it to be displayed in a familiar format and searchable, so it appears like a spreadsheet. I want to use access because I will be able to add more functionality and manipulate the date more easily going forward. Perhaps access lacks a straightforward way to do this and I may need to start asking about VB code.
Perhaps you will learn more about Access, navigating through Access and VBA as your project progresses. Access is Access, Excel is a spreadsheet tool. These products are built on different object models, and do different things.

There are many free resources --videos, tutorials, articles, forums, samples.... to help with concepts and terminology. That the terminology and presentation are not clear to you nor in your preferred format is a fact that will improve/change as you gain experience in the product.

    Good luck.
