    I would really like to put the button on the workorder subform so that it only previews the current record. Could this be done?

    Sure, but you have to switch to continuous view instead of datasheet. If you like datasheet (I don't), you can use the double click event of a textbox or something. You could also have the user click in a record and then on your button, but that's not very intuitive for them.
