Connecting Cognos Impromptu to MS Access?

    Hi All,

I've been building a rather large database over the last year or so and have recently become tired of dumping data from Cognos Impromptu reports into it.

More recently, I stumbled across the ODBC menu within Impromptu. Has anyone used this feature before?

My hope is that I could connect to the Cognos Impromptu catalogue via a front end Access database, allowing me to query on the data in real time instead of exporting Cognos reports and importing the data into Access. It would revolutionize the way I do things currently.

I'm still an Access novice, so I don't even know where to begin. Is this a pipe dream or actually possible?

    Thanks,

So far, I read that Impromptu can connect to Access data via ODBC but nothing confirms the reverse. You can try. Use the External Data connection wizard and try making ODBC connection to the Impromptu data.

That would be perfect. I do not want data to go upstream, only down to Access. The impact of someone accidentally getting into my Access tables and changing files in the source is a scary thought.

I haven't used ODBC connection for some time so forget but I think the Impromptu data could be modified through the connection from Access unless Impromptu has capability of setting tables as read only for designated users, as can be done in Oracle and SQL.
