Edit reports while others are in the database

I am used to old Access 97 where I could edit a report while others are in it. I created an Access 2007 db and it does not let me edit unless I have exclusive rights to the file. Is there a way to turn that functionality on?(editing reports/queries/ while others are in the database. ?

Don't think so. The common recommendation (and mine) is to split the db:

if you split it, will that allow for frontend changes while others are in the front end? or is it more of a change the frontend(local copy), then while no on is in the db swap it out?

You have a "development" copy of the front end that you make your changes to. When you're done, you copy it (or an mde/accde of it) to a specified location on the network. You use the method on that link or one of many others to automatically push/pull that new copy down to each user's PC. You are never in the copy they are working with.

I should have added, most of the methods I've seen have the user pointing not to the db but a utility. The utility checks versions, copies a newer version to the PC if appropriate, then starts the local copy. I've seen utilities like the one on that site, batch files, and various others. I write little exe files in VB6.

There are some free split database management tools available:

    AutoFEUpdater: http://www.autofeupdater.com/download.htm

    Application Starter: http://www.peterssoftware.com/aps.htm
