I installed an app "restoro" which I had read may correct the problem, but it had no effect. I defined forms in both MDB and accdb formats and the problem persisted in both.

By 'defined forms' you mean you built two dbs?

make sure the property BACK SYTLE = normal and NOT transparent.
then the colors take affect.
