I went to file>options>object designers - and under under query design -SQL server compatible syntax (ANSI 92), unticked both boxes (This database and default for new databases).
But it appears that I am still running ANSI 92.

There has to be some other setting - somewhere - but I have not found it. You said that "
you might want to update your details - they say you are using 2003". Is this the issue? Assuming that it is, where do I go to deal with this?

I "unticked" in those two places, but still the default setting is ANSI 92.

I tried to find the location where I appear to be running Access 2003 (in order to change it) but I cannot find it.

By the way, I have not converted to the current file format. I am still using the .mdb.

suggest you convert it - take a copy and convert that, just in case you have an issue.
