Omitting multiple criteria in Design Query Mode

OK, so very new to Access but an Excel guru; however I am now working with files in excess of millions of data points and that kills Excel. I am learning Access/SQL as I go...

With that said I am trying to write a what I thought would be a very simple query that keeps erroring even though what I am googling says to do appears to be what I am doing.

http://prntscr.com/equitf When I type in two conditions to omit, it breaks and lists ALL the status items but when I just use ONE (ie. Not "Closed") it works fine.

What am I doing wrong? I've tried in parenthesis, w/out. Using comma, semi colon, nothing.

    Thank you people.

    Try including In:

    Not In (...)

I think you created a boolean expression.

    Try:
    Not In ("Closed","Complete")

Edit: Too slow! Paul beat me by seconds!
