    Access 2010 or 2013?

I am currently running Access 2007 on Win XP. I'm in the process of upgrading all of our computers, but I can't do it until I find replacements for a couple of legacy applications. In the meantime, I'm thinking of upgrading Access, but I have a couple of questions:

    1. Can I upgrade just Access or do I need to upgrade all of Office?
    2. Would I be better off upgrading to 2010 or 2013 on my system (see below)?
    3. Can I even get 2010 or 2013? I see that 2016 is now available.
    4. What are the major differences between 2007, 2010, and 2013?

    The system properties show:
    Win XP Pro SP3
    Intel Core2 CPU
    T7200 @ 2.00 GHz
    998 MHz, 2.00GB RAM
    Thanks

    For a start review http://www.allenbrowne.com/Access2007.html

AFAIK, Access can be purchased separately from the Office suite. http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/...151207100756:s

All compatibility with dBase4 removed in Access 2010 but Data Macros were introduced. Access 2013 removed features like Collect Data and Pivot tables/charts. The ribbon changed a little from 2007 to 2010 but not as much as the change from 2003 menus to 2007 ribbon.

How to attach file: http://www.accessforums.net/showthread.php?t=70301 To provide db: copy, remove confidential data, run compact & repair, zip w/Windows Compression.

It looks like they are only selling 2016. I'm a little leery of jumping all the way to 2016, especially since it's fairly new. I'm also afraid of not being able to find as many people who know it well.

I don't know what any of that is, so I'm probably not using it.

One question I have is which versions will run on Win XP?

Very helpful, thanks. I didn't see anything there that I really understand, so I guess it's not a problem.

Do you know if 2010 or 2013 might have any problems running on an old XP system or interfacing with Office 2007?

The simple answer is, no. I do not know of compatibility, other than 2013 will not work. I believe Office 2010 will work on XP. My memory is a little hazy on that point. One thing though, XP is no longer supported by Microsoft. So, placing a fresh install of Access 2010 with updates, might cause issues. Also, any VBA that uses early binding to the Office suite will need extra attention.

I would prefer a new machine with W10 and 2016 over XP and 2007/2010. However, for distributing accde style Access applications, you want to use the oldest version of Access. In other words, an accde file made with Access 2013 or 2016 will not work with a machine running Access 2007. Instead, distribute an accdb or accdr to users with 2007.

I have had good experience with retail boxes from Royal Discount. Understand that the following links are for Key Cards only and do not include the DVD/Software. It has been many years since I have used their Open licensing, though.

Access 2010 (Office 2010 Pro) runs just fine on Win XP SP3.
    998 MHz, 2.00GB RAM
If that is Processor speed, it is marginal. And The RAM should be 3 or 4 GB (maxed out). A slow processor speed and minimal RAM means programs will run very slow.

3.2 GHz dual core and 4GB RAM is what I have. (Dell GX620)

Buy Office 2010 Pro sooner than later, even if you don't install it for months. The longer you wait, the harder it is to find it.

About 6 months ago, I bought 2 copies of O2010 Pro for about $135 (IIRC) each. 2 CD keys and an O2010 ISOs. No problems.

It sounds like I'll be better off sticking with 2007 until I upgrade the computers. That'll give me one more incentive to get the upgrade done. Thanks.
